Privacy policy

NearVox carries voice directly between nearby phones. It is not recorded, not stored and never sent to us or to a server on the internet. NearVox is built to be data-frugal: no accounts, no real names, no advertising, no tracking.

2. What data is processed, and why
- Voice and audio: carried live between the connected devices to make the conversation possible. No recording, no storage, no transfer to third parties or to us.
- Anonymous participant names (“Participant 1” and so on): purely temporary for the duration of the group, discarded afterwards. No real names.
- Random device identifier: a randomly generated identifier (no name, no phone number) stored only locally on the device, so that a device can find its way back into the group automatically after a brief drop-out.
- Technical error log: stays locally on the device and helps with troubleshooting. It contains technical diagnostics, no conversation content. It is only sent if you trigger this yourself in the settings (email to the controller).
3. Permissions
- Microphone: to carry your voice to the group.
- Camera: only to scan the group QR code.
- Local network and Wi-Fi: to find nearby devices and connect to them directly.
- Bluetooth: to use a headset or headphones.
- Location (Android): technically required by the operating system in order to start or find a Wi-Fi hotspot. NearVox does not collect, store or send any location data.
4. How the connection works
By default everything runs locally over Wi-Fi or the phone hotspot, without internet and without a third-party server. Only if a server of your own is explicitly entered in the settings does the connection brokering (signalling) run through that server chosen by you.
5. Disclosure to third parties
The app discloses no personal data to third parties. The app uses no analytics, advertising or tracking services. For the visitor statistics on this website, see section 6.
6. This website
The site nearvox.de is a pure information site with no accounts, no forms and no advertising. No cookies are set. When you visit, the hosting provider (Netlify, Inc., 512 2nd Street, Suite 200, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA) processes technically necessary server logs such as IP address, time and requested address in order to deliver the page and to secure operation (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). In addition, we use Cloudflare Web Analytics (Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA) to measure how often the site is visited. A small script is loaded that records anonymous information only, such as the page requested, the referring source, country, device type and loading time. No cookies are set, no identifiers are stored on your device and no cross-site profiles are created; individual visitors cannot be identified by us. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a privacy-friendly analysis of site usage (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). As both providers are based in the USA, data may be transferred to the USA. The server logs are deleted by the provider after a short time and are not evaluated by us.
7. Retention
Conversation data is not stored. The random device identifier and the technical log remain locally on the device and can be removed there at any time by uninstalling the app or using the app’s “Clear log” function.
8. Legal basis
Where personal data is processed during use (for example carrying your voice during a conversation), this is done to perform the function requested by you (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR) or on the basis of your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR).
9. Your rights
Since NearVox does not collect or store any personal data about you on our systems, we hold no such data. Regardless of that, under the GDPR you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection, as well as the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. 10. Changes
This privacy policy will be adjusted whenever changes to the app or to this website make that necessary.
